Outdoor Stations of the Cross – the story

Recently, Fr Kieran received an enquiry via our website, asking for information about our outdoor Stations of the Cross.

Kieran didn’t hesitate to pass on the enquiry to the person who was certain to be able to provide the requested information, our ‘resident’ historian, Paschal Sweeney.

After documenting his answer, Paschal offered the information for publication on our website and we were delighted to accept his offer. So, if you’ve ever wandered around the grounds of the friary in Multy, or perhaps, you saw them when RTÉ broadcast the 2023 Good Friday liturgy from the base of the Calvary, or maybe our outdoor Stations are a frequent place where you go to pray, and at any of these times you wondered about their history, then read Paschal’s piece and learn more about the story!

Once such example was a visit in late December, by some members of the Sweeney family from Tullamore, when they stood where their own father had stood, in the friary grounds, 75 years earlier, and recreated a photo taken at the time.

Here is their story!
